This contest sounds like a nice idea. I'll already recorded a fight, but I'll try to waste another two cruisers in January, then I will submit the best of my three losses. (I and winning a fight? Isn't going to happen. But at least this time I didn't get immediately alpha'd of the field, so I can see myself improving.) |

Now about fraps, I have a licence but I don't know what would be the best setting for recording, so I ask you what would be the best tradeoff for the fps setting? I know that 60fps will create very large files so I would have to compress them later, which is the least of my concerns.
And one other thing, is it okay if I would ditch the sound recording or would I have to keep that in too? I spoke with Daneel Trevize yesterday and we discussed settings for recordings. He made a fair point about FPS: You dont need a high fps since the fight will most likely be edited to a higher speed in the video and in eve there aren't really that many fast movements so you wouldn't really notice a lower fps. So 30fps would be perfectly fine. But more info about recording will come soon. As for the sound. It will not really play an important role, but in my opinion, it can be nice to have. However we are not gonna force people to include it as I know there are people who plays without sound and the video will have music anyways.
At a technical question, would it create problems if I record at a super-low fps? After my first video turned out incredibly ******, I tried several methods to make something looking at least reasonably good, but I ran into serious trouble with the recording: It stutters.
The only method I found that worked was reducing the frames per second of the recording until the jittering stopped. This creates nice, not too large videos with two more problems:
1. Sometimes, in fights for example, the video still stutters. 2. I think because of the ridiculous low fps, the video creates some serious eye strain. ( I had to go down to 5 fps with my recording software until that ******* thing stopped dropping frames, which made almost every movement in the recording jitter, instead of just some of it.)
Now the real question is, how can I prevent my recording from skipping like a broken CD?
Fun fact: Just as a test I tried reducing resolution, graphic details, everything. To my surprise, nothing altered the test videos in any way, except for reducing frame rate. HyperCam 2 is really weird. |

Specifically drive, not just a different partition which could be the same physical device even if it appears under a different drive letter in Windows. This should move any IO bottleneck from the 1 device to possibly your motherboard, RAM, or CPU if it then still can't cope.
It sounds like your recording software is possibly trying to do on-the-fly compression/encoding. While this can save you file space and some time later, it could be more than your setup can handle in realtime.
Wow, I'm kind of glad the option with different drives was the right one. (Eve is on a different physical HDD then my recording files. And copying all my videos files to another drive would have taken hours.)
Also I think I solved my troubles by changing my recording software. Hypercam 2 is dead, long live MSI Afterburner! My first test-video looked well and didn't stutter, hopefully I can now make the rest of my planned PVP-recordings without running into any more trouble. |

Welp, I finally have a setup that works. Now I already made two more videos, but wow. Does it count as PvP if you get executed by sentry guns with your enemy just sitting there laughing?
My third try was a bit better, but I accidentally switched my tank off. Oh and my 400 dps Maller ate my tank a lot faster then I accounted for.
Number of ignomious defeats: 3. Number of deaths: 1.
I have one last cruiser prepared, so let's see if I can actually record a fight and not a comedy routine, OK? |

OK, I had finally time to lose my last cruiser. Made 4 videos and already discounted 2 for the project. (One had ****** quality, the second is me accidentally executing myself, which may be funny, but sure as hell isn't a fight.)
Now I have a video where I lose my Maller because a) I forgot to switch on my rep until far too late and b) my T2-fit Maller sucked out his energy reserves far faster then I accounted for.
Then I have a video where I fight a trio of frigates using an Vampire-Arbitrator and get owned hard. It's the best video, but since I fight frigates instead of cruisers I'm not sure it's OK to send in this video. Or is the no-frigates-, no-destroyers-rule only for the ships we use ourselves?
By the way: Is it bad if I send in my video in a .mkv-format? My original .avi-files are all in crisp, sharp quality but also ludicruosly large.

I had some problems with .mkv files for sony vegas. Is it possible for you to compress it to a Mp4 file instead? Check the tutorial that is linked in the first post of this thread.
I looked into my rendering software and yes, I can compress it to mp4 instead. Already starting on it right now. |

It's almost two weeks since the last update and Eve files seems to still have trouble. Any news on alternatives we can use to upload our videos?
I could put my video in Dropbox and send a link to it, for example. |

Love.
Luckily I finally did post my submission. Video and details are send, but I somehow don't think my entry will make the cut.
But at least my incompetence will be worth a laugh.
Edit:
I think after the contest is over I will make a director's cut of my other failures and upload the video to Youtube. Highlights will include stuff like me forgetting to switch on my tank or the case of getting executed by gate sentries. Maybe I can even splice in some clips from an older video where my cruiser tries in vain to lock stealth bombers dodging me at a gate in FW-LowSec. (If I haven't deleted it yet, that is.) |

Try easy mode: Open up your in-game map or dotlan, look at a faction war system with lots of killed ships in the last hour, then go there and troll around some medium- or large PLEX. |

This extension is great! Not only because now I can submit two more fights: The last fight I had actually ended in me getting one kill in before being blasted apart. Without the extension, I wouldn't have been able to submit this.
Yes, it may sound strange after all my posts about how incompetent I am, but the last fight actually was a lot less one-sided then I anticipated. My Caracal against a duo of Assault-frigates and my tank held just long enough to get one of them.
I'm starting to render the two videos right now and should submit them tomorrow morning. And that's enough, I think.
Three entries made and five cruisers sacrificed to the PVP-god. |

Or if you're not engaging a 20man gang and laughing as you pick them off with ungodly tanking or flying, it matters that you try and have fun. Half of the purpose of this is to foster solo pvp (and to many pvp in general) among the populace. So go out, die/kill/fly and HAVE FUN, ask questions to people who seem to know more.
And dont be afraid to submit a fight, even if you think its subpar. The value of a gift is often not in it's intrinsic value but the meaning of it.
Spot on. If a person uses links, we expect more from that person than if he haven't used links. So a t1 cruiser punching above it's weight will definitely be a better fight than a linked blingy ship that stomps someone who didn't have a chance. Some of our submissions have already shown amazing things people can do in a t1 cruiser, even from low skilled players. So it is definitely worth for anyone to give it a try.
Just as a short head's up, I just noticed while visiting family some of the links in my last submission Eve-mail don't work. As soon as I get back home I repair the damage and resend the submission mail. (Also Eve files has destroyed the audio on one of my videos, so I'll have to re-upload that file again, too.) |

Yeah, I may even add a fourth entry, since we still have time until the end of March.

I think the magic sauce that Aldap and co are leaving out is where do you find these fights? So far FW space has been best, but they are never really alone and are always using links.
Anyway, looking forward to the result.
Sometimes you get lucky if you pretend to be just some carebear trying to farm tags in a LowSec-belt, if FW-central gets to boring. On dotlan you can see the systems with the highest activity, or you just take a LowSec-system which is a choking point between different strings of HighSec-systems.
The rest is experience, sooner or later you notice which ships you can and which you can't fight with your current fit at a glance, then you just warp out when you see them on D-Scan. Or prep your modules if you decide you can take them.

- Miriam Sasko - Member of Matari Exodus and one of their video guys
- James Kestrel - Been involved in editing a couple of eve videos including Guado's Samurai revenge 8 and 8.5
- iter Seektor - Professional media guy in RL who has also done some eve videos.
All 3 are experienced video editors and I am glad to have them on the team. Sadly, they have all been more busy than anticipated and the work slowed down again. So I'm getting to the point where I don't really know what do to about it. I will be away next week, but should have time again afterwards.
Don't sweat it, as long as any progress is done, it's good.
As long as you aren't as bad I have been with some of my videos, we'll understand. (I have two series of videos on my YouTube-account which are on infinite hiatus for years now.) Real life is more important. |

Are there still trolls complaining about the video not being fast enough? Good god, some EVE-players are either less funny then they think, or entitled assholes.
Just be happy I'm not the one responsible for the video, on of my video-series on YouTube is stuck on hiatus for over two years now because I keep finding more important things to do with my time.
If I'm taking over, you fine people would have to wait until August 2017 before I'm finished. |

Next time I will just spin my ship and **** up forums like everyone else. Except your never created this 'content' (which is still yet to materialize in any form by the way), 121 people who donated hours of video created this content. Your job is to put together the donations that the judges deemed the winners (15 submissions) and make it a classy complete video rather than it just being a chain of submissions with no editing and would probably look like a car crash jumping between each one. I was in support of you when it came to you releasing the winners because i thought you were ready to wrap up the project but it's been nearly 3 weeks since they were decided and 3 or 4 months since the submissions ended and from the sounds of it are not ready despite you claiming you only having 3 or 4 videos left to finish up. While i have no doubt you dont give a **** that you've let me down (who am i, amirite?) it also seems like you've disappointed the judges, those who submitted and the rest of the community. At this point you've said it's not going to be finished how you'd like it anyway so why not just release what you've got, at least then the community could at least have the submissions to go with that winners list... It's turning into the case of Duke Nukem Forver...
At the point you started ranting about this being his "job" now, I rolled my eyes so hard I got eye bleeding. Stop being so obnoxious, if you want this to be his job, pay him and let him sign a contract. Right now this is just something he makes for fun in his free time.
On other forums I was always joking about EVE: The Sociopathy Simulator, but I'm honestly regreting this now, since I apparently was really close to the truth if people like you are around. |
